- Client
- Penspen, an international energy-infrastructure engineering company, and its Theia pipeline-data platform.
- Service
- Cybersecurity (penetration testing) and cloud hardening on Azure.
The challenge
Penspen needed independent assurance that Theia, a web application holding restricted engineering data, was secure, and a plan to harden the Azure environment behind it. Early tests found an MFA issue and cloud-configuration gaps.
Our approach
- Repeat penetration tests of the web app and cloud configuration (January, June and November 2024), run on staging to protect production, each followed by a walkthrough call.
- A Well-Architected Review with a benefits, implementation and time-estimate plan per section.
- Hardening: Blob Storage to agreed recommendations, a site-to-site VPN, and metrics, logs and alerts for production App Services, PostgreSQL and Azure Container Registry.
- Governance: two-week sprints with pre-agreed estimates, and a recommendation to pursue ISO 27001.
The result
- The November 2024 retest found no new findings, and earlier findings had been fixed.
- The MFA issue was fixed between test rounds.
- Monitoring and alerting in place across the production app, database and container registry.
